Points Match 6, The Cam, Horningsea Boats, 30th August 2020

Apart from an obvious abundance of streamer weed, conditions seemed near perfect with some colour in the water and a medium flow. John had put in some midweek practice and reported that good roach, skimmer and small chub catches had been had by all anglers, these included Steve Palmer who had been reminding himself what to do and as a result put in a rare appearance for the match.

With everyone turning up on time Trevor kept his distance and drew for everyone, managing to pick me the one swim in ‘The Boats’ section without a boat, diminishing any hopes I had for some chub. As it turned out though I did at least get a high peg number, putting me in the better half of the section. With pegs 1 – 6 filling the last six positions and positions 2 – 10 going to the last nine pegs it really was a match of two halves! Gwyn was the one exception, he managed to win from peg 7, maybe because he fished hemp tight against his boat, finishing with just over 16 lb of roach.

Kevin was in his usual good form, goading me to have a side bet with him, especially when finding he had a nice black boat opposite him whereas I had absolutely no features except a ton of streamer weed. He also offered copious advice to Adam on his left who seemed to be trying to catch flying fish from the tree opposite him and even spear fishing via canoe when he had to ask a friendly boater to help recover several pole sections that had detached themselves when he tried to prune the tree with his 1 g rig!

Unusually nothing was heard from Trevor until the weigh in, he had said he would keep quiet this week for fear of being misreported! Clearly though he wasn’t doing too well as he was spotted half way through the match walking the bank to see what he was doing wrong, he wisely stopped before reaching Kevin once he heard from Jason about the two chub he had lost! Jason did manage to net a small chub of about 1 lb but his No 4 elastic was too light to stop the larger ones burying themselves in the streamer weed.

Warning of its arrival with fog horn type blasts ‘My’ boat turned up ½ hour before the end, but despite its size was skillfully maneuvered into position dead opposite me. The timing was a disaster for the decent skimmer I had just hooked because although the boat was moving only very slowly it still caused major turbulence, producing whirlpools and tangles of weed which despite best efforts allowed the skimmer to part company, costing me a few points. For the record though I still beat Kevin next to me.

Our next points match is on Reach Lode at Upware on 13th September, draw at 8:00. As usual please book with Trevor if you wish to fish, details as per the club book.
