Points Match 4 Burwell Lode Upware 2nd August 2020

The Lode has not been fished much this year due to the significant level of weed, in the week prior to the match it was in fact covered by a blanket of weed sitting just below the surface. I don’t know if those responsible for the conditions of the waterways ever send a weedcutter along it or dredge the silt, but along with the reeds and lily pads surrounding the boats that are seemingly permanently moored, it is in the worse condition that I have seen in my 10 years of fishing it.

It was again a bright breezy day with some cloud cover promised as many did not have a boat to fish up against, or if they did the weed prevented fishing close to it.

12 people turned up for the match John had forsaken his camouflage gear despite the clear water. It was fortunate he had as he decided to tumble down the bank where the draw was being made and it meant that he couldn’t take anyone else out as we saw him coming.

Prior to the draw Trevor was bemoaning the poor draws he had had to date, given he draws for everyone he has only himself to blame. Just to demonstrate how fair the draw is he said the only peg he didn’t want was peg 6 and promptly drew it.

I think by way of punishment he pulled out the adjoining peg out for me.

The favoured pegs were those at the far end and so it proved to be. It became particularly difficult to fish as the match progressed as the wind blew all the weed we had cut back down the Lode making presentation difficult.

Mark, Simon and John drawn at the far end picked up the first 3 places, again small fish seemed to be the order of the day although I did manage a Perch of about ¾ lb.
