Points Match 13 Burwell Lode, Upware, 5th January 2020

This wasn’t quite the day anticipated from catch reports of the past couple of weeks, a slightly lower temperature and difficult cross wind seemed to suppress all bites for the first ½ hour or so, for everyone that is except Trevor and Kevin in pegs 1 & 2.

Roach then started to wake up to give a reasonably steady if somewhat patchy catch rate for the earlier pegs up to No 7, the better fish first falling to punch but then maggot and caster. Later pegs however were still very slow to the end, except in the case of Ken on end peg 11 who was kept busy catching 70+ fish for just 14 oz, an average of 3.2 drams/fish (5 fish/oz)! It was suggested a new trophy, the small fish man, be presented to Ken.

In the end Trevor made the most of peg 1 to win with just over 8 lb, good for the day. Surprisingly very few perch or rudd were caught, other than one each of nearly 1 lb by Kevin on worm. Where do they go? This helped Kevin to second place with just over 7 lb, closely followed by camo John with 5 lb 9 oz.

Highlight of the day was seeing fishless Jason walk the bank to find Trevor trying to move the boat opposite him a bit closer by hooking its fender and applying maximum pressure on his No 4 elastic. Jason saved Trevor’s frustration by crossing the lock, boarding the boat and freeing the tightrope, denying all attempts from some to tempt him for a swim. The reports of Trevor having caught several decent fish including a bream turned out to be previous attempts to move the boat.

The next match is a sweepstake on The Cam at Horningsea boats section, Sunday 19th January, draw at 08.00. As usual please book on with Trevor so that he can ensure a good supply of willing chub.
