Sweepstake 2 Block Fen Mepal 2nd June 2019

Only 7 eventually fished this match, others had mostly good excuses, but it was a lovely warm day with baby grebes and emerging dragon flies to entertain.

With carp counting in full and with minimal obvious activity from the rudd, other than in Trevor’s swim on ‘the point’, it seemed that the best tactics would be to go for the bigger fish. Indeed those of us who tried otherwise saw no activity for the first hour or so, Trevor being the exception with a small rudd every cast from the off.

The ‘Mepal Marvel’ Rob was in top form, netting a 16 lb 1 oz common within the first hour and then sadly loosing two others. This was enough for a clear first place as no one else landed anything bigger than a few ozs. Trevor caught throughout the match but only small rudd, none of the more usual better specimens, and weighed in enough for second place with 11 lb 2 oz. Third place went to John Read with a 4 lb net of rudd, which he claimed could have been 5 lb if he hadn’t kept throwing fish back! In fact I should have come third but a fantastic perch that looked at least 4 lb somehow managed to slip the hook after a very tense 5 minute fight. I got him to the top just once but he was very determined that that would be my last viewing, a real shame.

Our next match is on 16th June above Baits Bite lock on The Cam. If enough want to fish we will extend the pegs above the A14, please book on as usual with Trevor, details as per the club book.
