Match 8, Reach Lode, Upware 10th September 2017
A calm, warm, misty morning heightened expectations for a good day and despite a dramatic weather change from the off, with an increasingly strong wind trying to blow us into the lode, this is what we had. Catches included a tench, several rudd over 2 lb and some decent skimmers contributing to a total of over 100 lb weighed in, an average of well over 8 lb per competitor.
Drawing the favoured pegs past the cables Kevin and Jason vied for first place, with Jason finishing only 6 oz behind Kevin’s 12 lb 14 oz. Mike Lynch managed a good third place with 9 lb 10 oz from midway along the match length. Less than 1 lb separated the next four places so it was a close fought match. I have to say I was a little upset at losing two good rudd, one well over 2 lb, during the last hour, with hindsight I should have pulled harder to stop the bigger one getting into a weed bed.
Trevor Sturge’s hemp tactics didn’t seem to work as well as usual and he had to settle for fifth place, 1 oz behind Simon. The Lodestar too had a less than perfect day, no big rudd this time, having to settle for ninth place but still with a good weight of 7 lb 4 oz.
Our next match on 24th September will be on The Lark at Prickwillow, another favourite venue that usually produces some good weights. As usual please book your place via Trevor, details as per the club book.
