I quite often get sent a nice selection of photos plus letters from our members so decided to dedicate a page on the site to the comments thoughtfully passed on by others... presenting Members Moments...

AN INCOMPLETE ANGLER WRITES...

To all CFPAS  members. One of the things I like about the web-site is the occasional accounts of fishing days that other anglers provide. There haven’t been many lately so I thought rather than moaning about it I’d do  one of my own. Now I know that with other articles  you often get useful tips but sadly there will be none from me . I’m afraid I’m not a good enough angler for that! My technique is awful , my gear is old , I still think that Mitchell 300’s are the best reels in the world, and I think I’m the only angler in Cambridge who hasn’t got a Pole. (No silly jokes please!)  So anyway I thought I’d tell you about my trip to our new water , ‘Byron’s Pool’ in Grantchester.

It’s only a long cast away from Lord and Lady Archer’s  Country retreat so on the way there you can say hi to Jeffrey , or throw some maggots at him if you prefer. If you haven’t been  before, this water is more of a large stream than a river. If you were a good long-jumper you could probably get across without getting your feet wet. It’s set in a wood that is straight out of a high budget  horror movie and the first impression you get is that it is very weedy. Get your sunglasses out though ,  and you will realise  that the weed is not everywhere and there are some holes which are pretty deep.

So what did I do? Well after ignoring my partner’s suggestion that I should ‘fish somewhere sunny’ I settled down at peg 5 , had a roll-up and flicked a few maggots in.  I then trotted a small float down and immediately caught a fish – a roach of about 2oz! Yes I read the Angler’s Mail too so I kept up the feed to get rid of the small ones. I caught another  ten of them! Then I tried a maggot and worm cocktail and caught a few more. And then....... I got a serious bite!! It must have been a chub. Well if it was a roach it was a record-breaker! Anyway I lost it.

After I’d stopped crying I went  for a walk to have a chat with another angler who told me that a couple of days previously he’d  had 11 chub , the best going to 5lb.  Am I the only angler who always turns up a couple of days after the action. He wasn’t getting much that day but he did tell me that he got the chub on quiver-tipped cheese-paste. Thought I’d give this a go until I remembered I’d got no cheese and no quiver tip either! So I went back and caught a few more roach and then went home for a drink.

To conclude I would encourage you to make use of this water. Particularly if you are amongst the minority of anglers who value the venue nearly as much as what you catch. Byron’s Pool is beautiful. Those of you over 40 will know what I mean when I say that it’s real ‘Mr. Crabtree’ stuff. Oh , and one more thing ,there are beautiful purple dragon-flies down there who have the endearing habit of perching on the end of your rod just long enough to take a picture. When I looked at the picture though , it  seemed to be laughing at me!

Hope to see some of you down there!

content from a Taff. "the carp abyss"

After being asked to write an article for the website all summer by Graham, here I finally am.  All us carp anglers (and match fisherman alike) were extremely expectant of the prospect of fishing Milton Pits this year.  Yes my mates said to me, a new venue to fish, result.  Todd Pits, the runs water on the Milton complex, has been busy with many people fishing it regularly all year.  My advice for Todd's would definitely be to use a helicopter chod type set up or a shocker or running bolt rig using lead core because not only is there more weed in Todd's in the summer than in Amsterdam, but the bigger part of the carp jigsaw is that there are very big boulders that sit all over the bed of Todd's, I know the carp have learnt over the years to zigzag in between the boulders as soon as they bite, taking with them your latest mono fluro or even braid and basically chopping it to bits against the stones.  So remember to catch every fish. 15lb plus line is required at Todd's for the carp.  The first time I fished there I caught four carp in five hours and only landed one because of 10lb line.

Anyway what a good summer it has been.  I have included a few photos to remind u all our club is a carp abyss so its winter know empty banks, greedy fat carp popping out for the old Scooby, winter angling soon sorts the boys from the men.

I said I would start Dickerson's Pit late Autumn, so far I have only managed two days there at the end of October.  One day was spent markering this big tricky water which lays in the middle of Cambridge on the Milton complex that no one catches carp from.  Not a single carp all year has been landed. On my first day markering I spotted a small group of 4 big carp patrolling, confirmation that they were here.

A few nice clear spots were felt her and there on the marker rod, I covered the whole lake in a day but you always miss tiny hotspots here and there.  Always marker your lake four times a year minimum, it changes down there from season2season year to year on the bottom.  So I was set for my first days angling on this big snaggy lake, one kilo of bait had been dropped on my chosen spots three days previously  I was hopeful. but expecting a blank due to the reputation as a hard water at Dicko's and blank I did.  I am really angry with myself for not going back there yet. but I cant leave Hertitage Lake alone.  So I am going to make a pact on paper to fish Dickerson's more and see if I can break the blanking curse of the lake.  So common boys and girls lets get one of those big old fish out of there.

Slack lines, Tony Duffin.

All the fish are lure caught using a 6"6 bait-casting rod and mini multiplier from the Chesterton to Clayhythe stretch of the cam..

The 3.8 pound perch was this season early morning second cast of the day :-) and hit the lure so hard he nearly swallowed it,  a new personal best: - the forceps in the photo are 10 inches long so the perch was 15-16 inches

The file with the strange name is of a chub of over 2 pounds also caught this season the perch that's in the photo stupidly swam into my landing net as I netted the chub was really funny. about 5 Min's later I had 2 massive carp swim past me right at my feet they were both well over 20 pounds I didn't even know there were carp that big in the cam.

The other two photos are of fish I caught out the same stretch of the cam between 2000 and 2002 that I thought might be of interest my personal best 16.5pound pike and two 14+pound pike , a 3.1pound perch and a chub of just over 4pound (I've only recently taken up fishing again after a long break and the first thing I did was renew my membership to this great club as I love the nice selection of waters available especially the rivers).

I haven't had much luck with pike this season yet but its early days , I do seem to be catching a huge number of perch to 2+ though and chub to 3+ so cant complain :-)

Thanks for listening I hope the photos attached are useful for the website as I really enjoyed catching these fish :-)
