Still Waters

There are no reports from our lakes and ponds this week.

River Report

I visited the River Lark, Burwell Lode and the River Cam on Sunday, 19 February. There were no anglers at Upware on the Lode, but it did have good colour and I fancy it will fish with mild weather. The early pegs at the Anchor Pub are fishing well, the ducks get fed here and so do the fish!

The early pegs at the Penny Ferry on the River Cam are worth a try; bread punch near the car park is best. The pegs in town opposite the boat houses are also worth a try with bread punch for the Roach and maggot for the Chub.

Six anglers were enjoying good sport with Silver Fish on the River Lark at Prickwillow Bridge, catching on pinkie.

Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

Burwell Lode

We fished Burwell Lode for two days; had seven Pike to 7lb and lost another five. Good colour in the water with good sport on small, vibrant, coloured plugs. Caught two on Smelt and small Roach dead bait. Paul Burgess and James Fordham

14 February 2012

There are no catch reports this week. It's not surprising that with frozen lakes and air temperatures of -10°C few anglers ventured out.

7 February 2012

Due to the bad weather there are few reports this week.

Still Waters

All our lakes are frozen.

River Report

The River Cam

Frozen in Cambridge.

Burwell Lode

Frozen.

Heritage Lake

heritage-lake

Just done a few hours this afternoon down at Heritage lake took a few photos for you.Caught two Carp and a massive 2 1/2 oz Perch.

I also filled up 15 bin liners with rubbish left on the banks.

Anthony Duffin, 29 January.

Milton Country Park

Pike active along the early peg numbers and also in the deep pool.

River Report

Burwell Lode

Worth a go for the Pike at the village end. Fishing hard elsewhere and in need of mild weather.

The River Cam

Picked up a bit this last week with the first few pegs at Clayhithe fishing to punch. The car park at the Penny Ferry is also a good spot as the ducks get fed in this area, as they do just above the lock at Jesus Green.

The River Cam, Byrons Pool

Fishing better since the recent rain but cold weather could hit this venue hard so keep an eye on the forecast. It’s a good roving venue for Chub and Pike if you just fancy a few hours.

The Great Ouse at Overcote

Worth a go for the big Pike that lurk in this venue.

The River Lark

Bang on at Prickwillow, lots of Silver Fish. Pike to 15lbs near the railway bridge.

Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

24 January 2012

Still Waters

There are no reports from any of our still waters this week.

River Report

Burwell Lode

Only the pegs at either end of the Lode are worth fishing at the moment. The venue needs extra water to put some colour into the system.

The River Cam

Some colour in the river has resulted in improved fishing with bread punch scoring well.

The River Cam, Byrons Pool

Extra water has put flow and colour into the river and catches have improved with good Dace and Chub showing well.

The River Lark

The pegs at Prick Willow are booked for a match this coming Sunday so avoid this section.

Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

17 January 2012

Still Waters

Barnwell Lake

Quiet at the moment but worth a go for the Pike as they spawn early and will start to be active.

Block Fen

Reports of a 30lb Carp over the Christmas break, a fish not seen for a couple of years. A tricky venue this time of year requiring skill and patience, but worth a go for the hardy angler.

Milton Country Park

Few reports this week so best avoided in the cold weather.

Nethergrove Lake

Very low and best avoided.

River Report

At this time of year the weather is key to where best to go. If it is mild we usually get rain and so the river Cam will respond well. Frosty days mean roving tactics for me at Byrons pool or on the river Lark.

Burwell Lode

I fished Burwell Lode at the Upware Lock to the outflow from Wicken Lode for a couple of hours early in the morning on Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th. On Saturday, with a lure rod, I had a small Jack about 2lb on a 9cm lure with a rattle and one other hit. On Sunday morning I had a slightly bigger fish but not much at about 5lb on a fly; one of my own designs to imitate a small Roach as I seem to only see small fish at the Upware end. There were a few Pike showing all along the boats but nothing very big at all. Have to go for a wander next time, see if I can find the bigger ones. Alan Robertson

First few pegs at the Burwell village end will produce to bread punch; the boats at Upware hold fish and this is a good place to head for Pike and Perch this time of year using dead baits or roving with light spinning rod and lures.

The River Cam

The lowering of the Cam last week meant that when it filled again colour was put into the river and consequently catches improved. The river through the commons fished the best with bread punch scoring well; the car park at the Penny Ferry also produced fish, but with frosts this week the colour will drop out of the river and catches will suffer. Go for pike with a lure roving in these conditions.

The River Cam, Byrons Pool

This is a great place to fish at this time of year, you never know what you will get. I have regularly had Brown Trout at this venue; I like to move around trying different swims travelling light.

The River Lark

This is our top performing river and is solid at the moment, there are unconfirmed reports of a big Pike near the bridge.

The Old West Stretham

Fish the early pegs for Roach, red maggot or pinkie best; otherwise avoid unless we get some serious rain. If we do get on the river for good Roach near the bridge.

Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

10 January 2012

Still Waters

We will be doing tidy up work at Nethergrove for two hours from 9am on Saturday 21st of January. Can you help? If so please contact Graham on 01223234616.

Milton Country Park

Good Pike catches from the deep pool.

River Report

All rivers need colour and flow.

Burwell Lode

The Anchor end, Burwell, the first pegs on the landing stage at are good, avoid all other pegs. Upware by the boats, a few fish can be had but best Pike fished unless we get some rain.

The River Cam

Generally fishing really poorly except for Pike fishing. The river needs colour and flow but with little rain forecast I fear the next week will not be any better.

The River Cam, Byrons Pool

I took my grandson Pike fishing last week; we went to the end of Byron's pool and worked our way back to the weir pool. Above the weir we had four fish pick up our float fished Smelt baits and the boy had another one on his favourite rubber Perch lure - all the fish were 3 to 6lb.We gave it an hour in the weir pool and the only thing we caught was a Red Signal Crayfish that would not let go of my bait until it felt the weight of my size 9 on its head. I saw Andy Whitehouse’s post about Crayfish in Barnwell and I have caught them myself and returned them; they are our indigenous ones with the white claw. We need to protect them. Ian Gypps.

See the News page for information and guides on the identification of the Signal Crayfish. They are pests which, by law, must be humanely killed and not returned to the water, Graham Tweed.

I decided to fish Byrons Pool on Sunday, 8th January. I fished for three hours from 12:30 to 3:30. I sat below the pool on peg no 5 and trotted a small 2bb+ waggler through the swim. Had a really enjoyable afternoon, caught some quality Dace up to 8oz and ended up with 3½ pounds of Dace, Chublets, Roach and Gudgeon, caught on double pinkie and single red maggot (nice to use a rod and line instead of the pole for a change). Trevor Sturge

The River Lark

Our top performing river - catches of double figure Roach and Rudd are the norm, Pike to double figures regular.

The River Great Ouse at Overcote

Worth a go for the Pike opposite the Pub.

Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

Still Waters

Barnwell Lake

Is there a crayfish problem at Barnwell Lake? I've fished there twice over the last couple of weeks and have seen a rather large crayfish when winding in (claws round my line) when dead baiting for Pike. This would explain what I thought were missed Pike runs! I did catch a small Jack of about one and a half pounds on a lure, he was a lively fellow. The venue was deserted which also made me wonder if fellow members were avoiding it? Andy Whitehouse.

River Report

The River Cam

andy-whitehouse's-pike

I've fished along the Cam during the same period I fished Barnwell Lake, I only live two minutes from the railway bridge; from here to Baits Bite Lock is producing plenty of Jacks on a variety of lures, the best (for me) so far is the 6 pounder I'm holding in the picture caught by the lock. The stretch between the railway bridge and Penny Ferry is also producing plenty of Jacks. A group fishing this stretch opposite the boats on Boxing Day morning had caught plenty of Jacks on float fished dead bait (small roach/smelt) when I walked past; one of the group landed a 7 pounder before I left them. I was tempted to go back and get my rod but we had relatives coming round that day, boo hoo! I'll carry on hunting down the double figure Pike I know must be along this stretch of the Cam whilst continuing to amuse myself catching the 'tiddlers'. Andy Whitehouse.

Still Waters

There are no still water catch reports this week

River Report

Burwell Lode

I spent two days dead baiting and spinning where Burwell Lode meets Reach Lode. Had only one small Pike around 2lb on small plug; no runs at all on deadbeat. Conditions very poor with many of the reeds cut back so Pike lays have gone. Water very clear! Paul Burgess

The River Cam, the Penny Ferry

I went down to the Cam with a lure rod on Wednesday morning, 21 December. Nothing special, but then again I tend not to catch much that is special, a couple of Perch, a few Jacks up to maybe 5 or 6lbs and a very confused Chublet ! All the best, Mark Gillard.

20 December 2011

A Merry Christmas to all our members. Hoping you find the fish over over the break and in the New Year, best wishes, Graham. PS Keep the catch reports coming.

Still Waters

Block Fen, Mepal

Very slow at the moment so best avoided unless we get a mild spell.

Milton Country Park

Pike to 15lbs common at the moment so worth a try.

River Report

The River Cam

Double figure Roach catches to punch on the cards round the Penny Ferry pegs or near the railway bridge. Baites Bite Lock or Clayhithe Bridge for Pike.

The River Cam, Byrons Pool

This venue benefits from extra water and colour so watch the weather forecast. Big baits for the Chub but try maggot for the Silver Fish. A lovely winter venue.

The River Granta

Head for this venue if we have more rain and you are after Chub. Chease works well on this venue, and expect fish to 6lbs, but you need colour in the water.

The River Great Ouse at Overcote

A good Pike venue now the weed has died back.

The River Lark

Pike to double figures in and around Prickwillow. Dead baits best. Try a small lure near the bridge for Perch, they go to 3lbs.

Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

15 December 2011

Few reports this week - people must be out Christmas shopping!

Still Waters

Barnwell Lake

Always worth a try this time of year; the venue benefits from being in the city and just a degree or so warmer. The Pike go to double figures.

Milton Country Park

Worth a try for the Pike in this venue now the weed is dying back. The deep pool is good this time of year. It’s worth looking out for the Silver Fish that shoal up as the Pike will not be far away. Dead baits are best.

River Report

Burwell Lode

Pegs tight at either end of the Lode continue to fish well on punch; avoid other areas as the fish are shoaled tight.

The River Cam

Bread punch fished at the Penny Ferry will get you good Roach to 1lb. Baites Bite lock for Pike, try roving with lures. Clayhithe near the bridge for Roach, again punch is best.

The River Lark

There are two water bookings this Sunday so give the venue a miss.

The Old West, Stretham

Avoid unless we get rain.

Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

6 December 2011; Still Waters

No still water reports this week; please keep the information coming into the holiday season.

6 December 2011; River Report

Best advice for the coming week is to head of after Pike. It looks like it’s going to get cold so a roving attack on our rivers would be best.

Burwell Lode

All pegs opposite the boats at Upware hold fish. First six pegs at the Burwell Village end will be good right through until the end of the season.

The River Cam, Baites Bite Lock

In need of rain like all our rivers at the moment. Head for Baites Bite Lock and fish anywhere below it to the first bend just past the road leading to the lock. Expect Chub, Perch and Roach.

The River Cam, Byrons Pool

This is a good roving venue for Chub; the fish shoal up in holes and just behind riffles.

The River Lark

Our most consistent venue around the bridges at Prickwillow; the river is stuffed full of fish. A good rain will help but all Silver Fish can be had along with pike to double figures.

The Old West, Erith

The first six pegs near the marina are definitely worth a go. Roach, Perch and Pike are active. Red maggot fished at 6m is best for the Silver Fish.

Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

29 November 2011; Still Waters

Barnwell Lake

Fishing well for Pike to 15lbs, dead baits best.

Milton Country Park

Pike to 20lbs from the deep pool on dead baits.

29 November 2011; River Report

Now is the time to go after the Pike on our rivers; the fish are in their prime going into the winter months. If you fancy just roving the Cam is really good as the tow path runs along all of our boundary.

The River Cam

Try lure fishing for Pike along the Penny Ferry stretch. The Roach are responding to punch fished at 7m in catches up to 15lbs.

Byrons Pool

Still very clear but this is a good winter venue for Chub and Dace - cheese paste works well. A roving tactic is best.

Burwell Lode

Fishing well with bread punch best - the first six pegs in the village produce to this tactic. Against the boats at Upware will also produce. There are some big Pike in the Lode and it's definitely worth a go with dead baits.

The River Lark

Running clear but spot on for Roach, Rudd and Chub. Try Folly Drove for Pike migrating up from the Great Ouse.

Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

22 November 2011; Still Waters

I have had no reports from our lakes this week....come on lets have some news.

22 November 2011; River Report

I spent a lovely Sunday morning visiting several of our waters and chatted to quite a few anglers who were enjoying the late autumn sunshine. One angler was after Pike on the Lode; he had not had a run but said it was all about the countryside fresh air and just getting out. How true.

Burwell Lode

Despite the Lode being very clear anglers, are having good sport at Upware with Roach, Rudd and Perch dominating catches. The fish are spread along the boats and so there are plenty of pegs available. The Burwell end is fishing in the first six pegs. We desperately need some rain to put colour into our rivers.

The River Cam

Pike to 15lbs along with smaller fish falling to lures above and below the lock; a good time to give the Cam Pike a go leading up to Christmas and beyond.

The River Lark

This venue remains spot on around the bridge at Prickwillow, lots of Silver Fish and lots of Pike. Interestingly a Pike angler fishing up at the top of our boundary on the road to Mildenhall reported anglers had caught small fish at this end of the fishery. I must give this big bay/bend a go.

The Old West

Give the Stretham stretch a miss, but the Erith stretch is worth a go; the Silver Fish migrate towards the lock this time of year.

Our season permits are half price from December; a perfect Christmas present. Cheques payable to CFPAS Ltd. Send off now and we will dispatch by return. Our agents can sell the books at half price from the first of December.

Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

Our Angling Expedition

I took my 13 year-old grandson lure fishing on Saturday morning. We started by the lock at Upware and fished our rubber Perch lures up to the bridge by Wicken Fen. We both had hits from Perch to 1/2lb, but no pike showing. We moved to the Old West by Stretham Engine, just as a boat came through and mudded the water; we gave it 20mins but nothing was taking. Plenty of silk weed had been turned up by the boat screw so we relocated to Baits Bite Lock. We both had hits from small Jacks below the weir stretch.

We walked up above the Weir to watch the University rowers race start. After they had gone we started fishing from the A14 bridge up-river towards Cambridge, we only got 200 yards from the bridge before the first good take. It frightened the life out of my grandson when he saw the fish he was playing on his 7ft spinning rod. After a couple of minutes frantic playing the fish I only just managed to get to collapse across the span of my 30" landing net. It was HUGH: 40" long and weighing in at 15lb 10oz - my grandson could not believe his eyes. It was also seen by several people walking along the river that afternoon. Regards, Ian Gypps

15 November 2011; Still Waters

Barnwell Lake

Reports of double-figure Pike to dead baits. This venue often fishes in the winter for Roach and is worth a shout in mild weather.

Milton Country Park

No reports from the Pike lads, but reports of Carp to 14lbs from the pegs near the centre.

15 November 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode

The pegs at the Burwell end are producing to bread punch. Try along here for the Pike - I have had reports of double-figure fish.

The River Cam

Heavy rowing traffic above the lock makes life difficult so mid week a better bet. The river is very clear and with the prospect of colder nights expect the fish to shoal up. The better section would be below the lock, some good Chub are showing in this area.

The River Lark

Always a safe bet for Silver Fish right through until the end of the season; the Pike lads are giving it a go but after Christmas will produce the better fish.

Graham Tweed - President CFPAS Ltd.

8 November 2011; Still Waters

Block Fen, Mepal

Quiet at the moment, but worth a try for the Pike in the B pit.

Barnwell Lake

This is an underrated Pike venue and worth a try in the winter. The Pike are getting bigger; the previous owners had a catch and remove policy but all this did was create an explosion of small pike. We stopped this, and now there are fewer Pike, but bigger ones.

Milton Country Park

This is a big Pike venue with 30lb fish on the cards. Recent reports of double figure fish indicate they are feeding. Dead baits are best as it is still weedy.

8 November 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode

Again fishing well, with regular catches of 20lbs against the boats at Upware. Hemp is good, with Roach to a pound and a half fished down the track.

The River Cam

Still weedy, and the rowers above the lock are a problem, however, individual swims have been cleared so look out for weed piles. Chub to 5lbs were caught in the recent Winter League along with Perch to 3lbs. Small baits like double pinkie are scoring best with punch an option in the winter.

The River Lark

Spot on for Silver Fish near the bridge, but also good for Perch and Pike. Dead baits are best for the Pike.

The Old West

Avoid unless we get some serious rain.

Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

1 November 2011; Still Waters

Block Fen, Mepal

Pike in the B pit to double figures. Carp still showing in the A pit. Fancy a bash at the Rudd then try the A pit hemp, and castors are best.

Milton Country Park

Producing Pike to dead baits. The Rudd are still showing in the deep pool and on pegs 6 7 8 in Todds.

Nethergrove Lake

Very low water conditions but fishing well for Silver Fish. Put a maggot on and you will catch all day.

1 November 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode

Fished for Pike at Cock Up Bridge last week. My mate caught three on the first night 9lb, 8lb and 7lb; then neither of us had another run for 48 hours. I float fished and had nothing at all. Moved to the Anchor for last day where I had seven Bream to 2.5lb as well as Perch to 0.5 lb. Paul Burgess

Burwell Lode

Still fishing well at either end. There is a match this Sunday about 12 anglers at the Upware end.

The River Cam

Sport good considering the clear water conditions; mixed bags of Roach, Perch and Chub - chopped worm and castors are best. Try the shallows at the cut at Milton for big Chub, or the boats opposite Horningsea church.

The River Granta

This is a great stalking water and worth a look now the weed is dying back. Cheese paste works well on this little river.

The River Lark

We have a club match this Sunday. I expect Silver Fish catches, but if it stays mild the odd big Tench or Perch will show. Our pegs will be around the road bridge area.

The Old West

Best give this a miss while the water is so clear.

Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

25 October 2011; Still Waters

Milton Country Park

dickersons-pike

Went for a walk around at the weekend then fished Tuesday afternoon/evening. On the walk I spoke to a lad who had four Carp all over 20lb from Dickerson’s on Friday night, including a fine 30 lb Common Carp! A few Pike to 10lb from Dickerson’s on Friday as well. I and my partner fished the deep pool Tuesday afternoon /evening for Pike on legered dead baits. I had one in the afternoon of exactly 15lb and my partner had her first ever Pike at 7lb 2oz in the evening. Also had a bigger one lost at the net and two dropped runs. We have been to a lot of the venues as new members to the club. We’re going for Zander at Streatham on Friday night so will let you know how we got on. Regards Mick Smith

25 October 2011; River Report

All rivers are in desperate need of rain. They are very clear, which makes fishing very difficult and especially with fish migrating and shoaling up tight.

Burwell Lode

Very clear at the Anchor end and at Upware but coloured at the Cock Up Bridge! There is a machine working the bank at the Cock Up so this must be putting the colour in the water. Pike anglers are reporting activity in this area to dead baits fished at night. The venue is quite neglected and could throw up a big fish this winter. Rudd and Perch are dominating catches at Upware with bread the favoured bait. Roach and Skimmers in the early pegs at the Anchor end.

The River Cam

Despite difficult conditions the river is fishing quite well for Silver Fish. Anglers having mixed bags at Chesterton, Baits Bite and Clayhithe. Small Chub dominating catches at the lower end section but Roach also showing to red maggot fished down the middle.

The River Lark

The pegs around the bridge are best, but it is worth a go on the road pegs going towards the railway brige. The river has some depth and width here and so the Roach and Rudd will show in these pegs. Fish down the middle or over for best results. We have a match on the venue on the 6th of November which should be interesting.

The Old West

Don’t bother unless we get some rain!

The Hundred Foot Drain

Worth a go at Sutton Gault. The venue could throw up a few surprises despite it being clear. Maggot is best down the middle on a long pole or feeder.

Graham Tweed - President CFPAS Ltd.

18 October 2011; Still Waters

Milton Country Park

The venue has been a little slow but picked up last week with the mild weather. Good catches of Roach from the deep pool. Maggot now scoring well with ground bait as feed.

Nethergrove Lake

Very low water conditions but still fishing well for Roach and Rudd. Bread flake catching the Carp....they seem to love the stuff!

18 October 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode

Upware producing good Rudd and Perch with fish to 2lbs. Worm proving to be the best option for the better fish. Bread punch is best at the village end of the Lode with good quality Roach. The ducks get fed so hence bread punch!

The River Cam

The Penny Ferry is fishing very well despite the clear water conditions. Mixed bag catches of Silver Fish with double figures on the cards around the railway bridge. The shallows pegs just around the corner at Milton below the lock are producing Chub and Rudd. Martin Caldecote had a lovely 1-14-0 Rudd last week along with some other decent fish.

The Old West, Stretham

Pegs near to the bridge producing some fish in the clear water, but this venue is best avoided unless you are after Pike or Zander. There is a match this Wednesday, which will give a better indication of how this venue is fishing.

The River Lark

Mid week catches showing best with good Roach catches near Prickwillow Bridge. Red maggot with hemp feed sorts out the Silver Fish. Chop worm for the Perch and Tench.

Graham Tweed – President CFPAS Ltd.

11 October 2011; Still Waters

Barnwell Lake

Not at its best but it’s a good Pike venue and worth a try.

Block Fen, Mepal

Spot on with the mild weather producing good Carp catches to boilies.

Borrow Pit, Sutton

Pike in this venue are a lovely colour and worthy of a go if you do not mind a bit of a walk.

11 October 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode

Starting to run clear, although on Sunday there was a lot of boat traffic, which colours the water and keeps the channel clear of weed. The Roach are showing well although they are beginning to shoal up, so cover, like moored boats or rushes, helps. Bread punch is a favourite winter bait often producing fish when all else fails.

The Pike lads are out on this venue. I need to get my Fishery Officers out to make certain permits are available for those just turning up.

The River Cam

The river is very clear and although the weed is dying back it makes life difficult. It is worth going weed spotting to try to work out where there are weed free spots. Where there is weed there are fish! Cover in clear water is essential and so it is about how to present the bait in the conditions. I prefer to fish the loop method on the feeder. I fish castor and little red worm. The bait does not bury and the loop keeps snagging to a minimum. If you can sort out a clear bottom and get the feed down the Bream will show. Favoured pegs remain near the A14 road bridge, but if you don’t mind a walk at Clayhithe walking up stream for about half a mile you come to a avenue of trees and in this stretch lurk some real big Bream and Chubb. This area is much neglected but worth a go.

The River Lark

Lots of Silver Fish at Prickwillow Bridge, and along with the bait fish are the Pike! Perch to 2lbs are also to be found, particularly near the bridge and the willows on the far bank. Red maggot as bait will give you good sport but again punch will score as the days get cooler.

The River Cam at The A14 Bridge

norman's bream

As promised I went back to the Cam under the A14 Bridge and got a couple of decent Bream although that was all I caught as it is difficult to get on the bottom. I caught them float fishing with a drift beater on red maggots. Still very weedy.

Norman Gautrey

The Old West at Stretham

Bang on near the bridge but gets much harder further into the meadow. Pinkie scores well fished at nine metres. There are some good Zander in this venue. Night time is best for these fish.

The Great Ouse at Overcote

Fish on the platforms opposite the pub for Rudd, Perch and Skimmers, red maggot or castors are best at around nine metres on the pole or on the feeder.

4 October September 2011; Still Waters

Block Fen, Mepal

Spot on with the Carp lads enjoying great sport in both pits with regular double-figure fish. Good quality bollies are needed. If you just fancy a Silver Fish bash casters are best with hemp as feed.

Borrow Pit, Sutton

Worth a try for the Pike; dead baits are best.

Milton Country Park

Double figure Pike to dead bait in the deep pool. The lakes are a good venue for Pike and it will be no surprise that the venue will produce a 30 lb fish. Tench and Rudd dominated catches this last week with the settled weather helping. Sweetcorn presented feeding little and often producing the better fish.

4 October 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode

Fishing really well. Seed baits or little red worms worth a try while we have the warm weather. The Rudd and Skimmers love this bait so give it a go.

The River Cam

Skimmers picking up in double figure catches around the A14 road bride with red maggot producing fish on long pole or feeder.

The River Lark

The venue has been good this term so definitely worth a go. Castors seem to produce the better fish. There are some good Rudd in the river fished along the road side near the bridge.

Graham Tweed - President CFPAS Ltd.

27 September 2011; World Rivers Day Festival

John Pope, Will Temple and I took part in the World Rivers Day Festival on the river Cam on Sunday, organised by the Cambridge Boaters. What a great day it was, with all kinds of activities, stalls, displays and bands. We had our top coaching team out and along with our gazebo and information about the club I thought we scrubbed up really well. We were next to the Environment Agency chaps with their posh information display and a fish tank with all kinds of fish swimming happily around. The EA lads kept coming over to admire our coaching skills particularly my long distance waggler fishing! We did half hour slots and coached from 8-30am until 5-30pm. Most had never fished before but in difficult conditions caught something; mainly Dace, Perch and Roach. It was nice to see was the Dace, they were a good size - up to 4oz. It has been quite some time since I have caught a Dace; we must have had 20 or so during the day.

John does a fantastic job organising things, setting up the stand and all the paperwork - a thankless task. When Will and I get together we can’t help ourselves, and have a great laugh. I think John is getting use to it and just leaves us to get on with it! I do think it unfair, though, that Will alleged that I was putting people up to filling in the compliment/comment sheet with my comments. No need I AM JUST AWESOME.

Heritage Lake

terence-evans

I love it, I go every week.

It's a pity people don't take all there rubbish away with them. I caught three on this visit, the first was 26lb.

Terence Evans

27 September 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode

Fishing very well. Good size Bream near the Wicken Lode along with Rudd to over 1lb.The warm weather has meant seed baits are producing. Fishing down the track is best. Anglers please note we have a water booking at Upware on the 9th of October and we have a club sweep at the Anchor. The following Sunday we have our club points match at Upware.

The River Cam, Byron’s Pool

The weed is starting to die back. Water levels are low but this is a lovely venue for Chubb and Roach. Something different; try stalking with cheese pate for bait, put on a maggot and you will catch minnows.

The River Cam above Lock to A14

Fishing has improved with catches of proper Bream. Feeding chopped worm and castor with long pole or feeder best. I have found it best to attack the venue this year to get best results.

The River Lark

Fishing better in the week. The Roach have been showing to castor baits along with catches of Skimmers in bags of 30lbs. Roadside pegs are best. Pike are a pest, but if you like catching snappers then head for this venue.

The River Granta at Whittlesford

Only the brave will tackle this venue as it is still weedy, but fish in a hole and you might catch some big Roach or Chubb. Cheese paste is good on this little venue. There are also some god Pike to be had.

Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

Barnwell Lake, Cambridge

common-carp

Still on the quiet side during the day, but evening and night time is producing some nice Tench and Bream on sweet corn/pellets. On a sad note there are folk fishing there and leaving litter behind, i have also tidied up certain pegs as access was bad due to overhanging trees, etc. and raked out a few swims. The lilies have almost gone, but it is still very weedy in places. One last thing is that I had a few hours there Wednesday evening and landed a nice 8 ½ Common Carp. David Aldred

Hermitage Lake

perch

Had a couple of sessions fishing this lake and enjoyed it although something needs to be done about the road leading to it. Caught mainly Perch and Roach, the biggest one is shown attached.

Norman Gautry

The Borrow Pit, Sutton

Have fished this a couple of times and lost two big Tench there, which was what brought me back. Both hooked on sweetcorn. Hundreds of Roach and Perch there plus Pike if that’s your thing. Norman Gautry

Block Fen, Mepal

Fished this venue but found it a bit featureless to be honest. Norman Gautry

20 September; River Report

The River Cam

Fished this yesterday above the lock and caught a decent Perch and a Rudd just messing around fishing maggots on the drop. Will have to fish it properly one day soon, but there is a lot of weed cyclists runners and boats!

The Old West - Stetham Old Engine

Have had no luck what so ever with this venue. I have raked and pre-baited the night before; fished all types of baits and got up at 5 o’clock in the morning and have caught absolutely nothing!! I have tried three times, the latest last Thursday.

Milton Country Park

Stay out of the water as there is blue/green algae here. Always wash your hands after fishing and before eating. No catch reports, but last weekend produced some low doubles. Have a go for the Pike...they are massive!

6 September; River Report

Burwell Lode

Up until our match this Sunday the venue has been spot on. Don't be put off - get on this venue if you want some mixed bag fishing. Hemp and castor rocks at the moment.

The River Cam at Milton

Fishing has improved with proper Bream on the A14 pegs above Baits Bite lock. Good Perch have also shown at the outfall above the A14, lobworm best or a little spinner.

The Granta at Whittlesford

Only the brave...as it is still very weedy, but the keen lads will do well for the big Roach fishing in holes in the weed. Bread or cheese is best.

The River Lark

Ken Whitmore has been bagging the Skimmers all season in the deep water up from Prickwillow Bridge. Castors or red maggot with a little ground bait works well. Downstream at Folly Drove for big Bream, but you will need to clear a swim.

The Old West

Improved this week so have a go fishing at 9m for the Skimmers with a light pole rig with pinkie on the hook.

The next Catch Report will be posted on 21 September. Graham Tweed - President CFPAS Ltd.

30 August 2011; Still Waters

Block Fen

Very busy so get to the venue early to bag a swim. Good sport has been had on boilies but avoid the cheap stuff to avoid blanks. Dog biscuit flavoured is also good. Silver fish are showing well but much depends on the direction of the wind as to locating the shoals. Fishing into the wind is best but not always pleasant!

Milton Country Park

This venue is not an easy Carp water but those in the know put in the work and get rewards. The Carp here are not simos so they are for the angler who wants to catch a wild fish - well they are not true wildies but anglers know what I mean. These fish have been in the venue some years and have grown slowly. A 23lb Common and a 24lb Mirror came out this week with plenty of fish around the 14lb mark.

Nethergrove Lake

I didn’t have much free time last week, but I managed to find two hours to fish the lake and caught two beautiful Mirror Carp. They were small, both just over 4lbs, but they were pristine and the colour of their fins and body was just fantastic - I have never seen such beautiful Carp. Sadly the Carp moved out and small Perch took over the swim. The water was coloured, but I did see an interesting dark orange, almost red brick coloured shape wandering past about six inches below the surface and two feet in front of me. JEH

Nethergrove Lake

The hazel is ready to be coppiced we are happy for someone to have the hazel in return for cutting it. Please contact Graham Tweed.

30 August 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode

Fishing very well. This is the time of year to head to this venue. The weed cutter has put colour in the venue but another trick is to look for more colour, which indicates feeding fish.

Burwell Lode

I fished Burwell Lode yesterday right next to Cock Up bridge - struggled to get anything of any size although conditions looked perfect at 6.30 a.m - coloured water, overcast + fish topping + plenty of bubbles. Tiny fish a chuck on maggot + Perch close in. Good Rudd on worm fished across to the reeds at 13m. Some decent Skimmers + Roach/Bream hybrids on sweetcorn. Pellets, tares + wheat failed to produce anything decent. Other anglers walked past me quite some way to fish both sides of the lode both above + below the bridge. Those fishing closer to Burwell reported good Bream to 4lb. Ian Neve

The River Cam

Improved catches this week but Roach still shy. Proper Bream above the lock to the A14 with the pegs just below the A14 best. Long pole tactics or the feeder are best here where you can expect Bream to lbs. Chubb up against the boats at Horningsea in mixed bags of Silver fish.

The River Lark

Mid week flow helps catches with Skimmers showing near the bridge car park up towards the moorings.

The Old West

Mixed reports this week but with autumn soon upon us I have always done well on the Stretham pegs fishing red maggot or castor with a little ground bait fed little and often. The alternative is to fish slop with pinkie with small balls going in regularly at around 7m.

The Great Ouse at Over

Very weedy but good Perch to feeder fished in the weed channels.

We need you photographs of the venues so come on get them sent in. Graham Tweed - President CFPAS Ltd.

23 August 2011; Still Waters

Block Fen

Reports of a Tench of 10lbs yet to be confirmed but would be no surprise as these fish pick up the boilies baited for the carp. The A pit is fishing well for Rudd up to 2lbs with worm a good bet for the better fish.

Milton Country Park

No reports of Carp being captured this week. Sport slow for the big Rudd and Roach. Plenty of small fish to maggot if you just fancy a bashing session.

23 August 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode

The weed harvester has done its job but there is still plenty of weed. The venue is fishing well and definitely worth a go. Wheat can be a good bet this time of year and tends to sort out the better fish.

The River Cam

Plenty of Bleak in the stretch above Baits Bite lock. The Roach are starting to show in catches but the best bet is to fish for the Skimmers looking out for a gap in the weed and fishing either on a heavy pole rig or feeder.

The River Lark

Good Rudd showing along the roadside pegs. The Skimmers are a bit hit and miss and much depends on if the river has a little flow. Maggot will always get you fish but again as with all the rivers clear conditions are not helping.

The Old West at Stretham

Boat traffic is heavy at the weekends. The river is quite clear and so sport has been patchy. The best bet is to fish early mornings for the Tench and if you can, pre-bait the evening before. There are some big Eels in the river this year if you fancy a go!

Graham Tweed - President CFPAS Ltd.

16 August 2011; Still Waters

Nethergrove Lake

Fishing very well. If you want to bash the Roach and Rudd all day fish the maggot or castor with loose feed tactics best. Our coaching programme has gone well on this venue - last Tuesday anglers had a variety of fish including a lovely Common Carp of around 3lbs in our hour long session in the evening.

Sportsmans Pit

I have just enjoyed two days fishing at Sportsman's Lake. I managed to catch Perch using a float, with a spinner and with my very first attempts at ledgering! Mike Durrant

16 August 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode

The weed harvester has done its job, but also coloured the water, which means the potential for bumper catches. All common species are worth a try but Bream and Tench to 4lbs have been showing in swims at the Upware end and at the Cock Up Bridge section.

The River Cam

The Roach are still not showing in numbers. It is best to target the Bream and Perch with the A14 swims the hot spot along with swims just below Chesterton Railway Bridge. I prefer to fish the feeder with worm and castor but the long pole with a heavy rig to get you through the weed works well. Catches to 30lb recorded.

The River Lark

This river produces well when there is a little flow. Good catches of Rudd have been recorded with fish to 1 lb in double figure catches in the bridge section swims. Red maggot or castor is best fished with a little hemp fed little and often.

The Old West

Weedy but the far section swims are worth a try for the Tench, which go to 6lbs. Reports indicate mixed fortunes with some good catches of Rudd and Skimmers, but other days the river seems off. Much depend on the weather and boat traffic. The favourite method for the Tench is to fish at around 9 metres on the pole over chopped worm.

9 August 2011; Still Waters

Block Fen Lakes

Very popular with the Carp boys, fish to 20lbs common. Bream also showing in the A lake to method feeder. To bag a swim you need to be early!

Borrow Pit

Weedy in some swims but early morning Tench are showing to the dedicated angler, with worm and castor a must. If you get fed up you can always fish the river behind!

Heritage Lake

I risked my car's oil sump and exhaust by working my way gingerly down to the lake Friday afternoon 5th of August. It’s the first time I've been to the lake and I must say I think it’s just wonderful, (best keep it a secret), and I will certainly be returning as large Carp were showing all Friday afternoon and early Saturday morning (yes, I was tempted to 'ruff' it for the night, and stayed). I only caught a small Crucian at 5:30am on Saturday on my 'main rig', but had some lovely fun 'Minnow bashing' (hate that term) all day Saturday. Some Rudd and small Commons weren't exactly minnows – 1¼lb some of them. Anyway a great little 'get away' place. Andy Gathercole

Milton Country Park

Carp to 14lbs, Tench to 6lbs and Rudd to 2lbs common. The swims are weedy so it is best to fish in the holes or to weed rake. Sweet corn still proving to be the popular bait for general angling. Boilies best for the carp.

Reach Lake

The Carp are up in the water and proving difficult to catch. Red maggot will get you silver fish fished at 6m.

9 August 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode

I spent a couple of days near Cock up Bridge with another member last week. Caught 18 Bream to 5lb, the majority around 3.5lb. Many were caught stalking the shoals. I caught two nice Tench weighing 5lb and 5½lb. Hooked into a Carp on worm but not on correct line so it quickly snapped me at the hook length. Got a look at it, would have been low double figures. No Eels at all! Regards Paul Burgess

Please Note. The Environment Agency are weed removing on the Burwell Lode this week. Good news, but plan you session taking note of the operation which should be completed this week. Graham

The River Cam

Very weedy but the fish are there. Will Temple fished above the lock and had Bream to 3lbs on worm on the feeder. He also had a mutant Rudd the colour of a gold fish! The Roach are still not showing in catches but with settled weather I expect hemp catches to be the norm this month.

The River Lark

Carp anglers have targeted fish in this venue near the bridge - river Carp fishing is becoming big these days with fish in the Great Ouse, the Old West and the Cam targets. Pre-baiting is necessary over a period of time with hours needed to be put in. The Skimmers are still the main target with Roach not showing which is common in the Fen at the moment. Prickwillow bridge is best fishing castor over a little ground bait.

Graham Tweed - President CFPAS Ltd.

2 August 2011; Still Waters

Mepal Block Fen

Fishing really well with catches of Carp to 15lbs in the A pit. Big Rudd also common with fish to 2lbs. Hemp fed little and often attracts the Roach which are common in the lake. Pole is best but watch out if it goes quiet - this could mean the Carp have moved in.

Milton Country Park

Tench to 6lbs on the feeder. Keep the bait going in and the fish will come onto feed. Sweetcorn still the best bait. Eels to 5lbs on dead baits picked up on pike gear. There are some big eels in this water so a proper fish will produce some surprises! The Carp lads tell me they are huge! Not for me but..........

Nethergrove Lake

As a new member I fished this lake for the first time last Friday afternoon (22nd July) from 4 till 9. Had lake to myself, very peaceful. Even saw a kingfisher fly past me, it was that tranquil. After catching a few small Rudd and Roach on soft pellet and corn on the float I went on the ledger and missed a Carp of about 3lbs (large halibut pellet) that was too quick to keep out of the lilies. However, I did land two Carp at about 8pm , first was about 5-6lbs on corn (float right up to the lily pads) and then, thinking the swim would need a bit of a rest I went back on to the ledger and fished open water to the right of me and almost immediately caught a Carp of 3-4 lbs on pop up banana boilie. After that it went quiet and nothing more except small Roach and Rudd on corn till I packed up at 9. So it was 3 carp hooked and each on a different bait.

Knowing a bit more about the water I can see how 20lb catches are easily possible but it was nice to catch a fish slightly larger than the general 4lb range that feature in your reports. Will go again soon. Martin Taylor

A note from Graham. Please note weekends are quiet - people think it will be busy but quite the opposite. Chopped worm is proving a good bet if you are after the Perch and Rudd. The Carp are up in the water so surface baits a good bet.

We start our coaching 2nd August (Tuesday evening) so further catch reports expected. Graham Tweed

Reach Lake

All pegs are clear to fish - the working party on Sunday did the job. A big thank to members who are keeping this venue clear of litter. We need your continued support. Big Carp spotted but no catch reports. Worm and maggot will produce silver fish on the pole. The track is passable with care! This is a good venue for a bit of fun but be certain to bag your swim early.

2 August 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode

Upware best. Take a rake - this clears your swim but also attracts the fish. Big Carp have been spotted near the lock. Roach to 1lb are showing to boiled wheat. Weed raking is necessary at the Cock Up Bridge.

The River Cam

Fishing better above Baits Bite lock but the weed makes life difficult. Bream to 4lbs in catches of 20lbs with castors proving the best bait. Roach still not showing but I expect hemp catches to improve this month. Below the lock will produce in the faster water.

The Rive Cam - Byron's pool

Very weedy but fish in the holes and you will get some surprises. Proper Dace! Head above the weir for big Roach on flake. This is a good evening venue so make the most of it! Cheese paste is also a good bet this time of year.

The River Lark

Bang on for Tench and Skimmers. Sweet corn on the feeder sorts out the better fish. Maggot will get you fish all daY on the pole.

The Old West

Weedy, but good catches continue with either chopped worm for Skimmers and Tench or castors for Roach.

Graham Tweed - President CFPAS Ltd.

26 July 2011; Still Waters

Nethergrove Lake

Carp to 4lbs in catches of 20lbs are now common. Pick your preferred style on this shallow venue. The best approach is to feed little and often to attract fish into your swim.

Reach lake

Continues to produce Roach, Rudd and Skimmers with Tench also in double figure catches. Maggot will give you a day’s sport but bigger baits will sort out the better fish. Pole is best at 6m or cast a bait to the rushes.

26 July 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode

Fishing really well at Upware. Twenty Swims have been cleared. Littleport anglers held a match last week and the winner weighed in 14lbs. Proper Bream and Tench were the main species. Worm on the pole produced the best results.

The Great Ouse, Overcote

Weedy but fish in holes in the weed for big Perch and quality Rudd. Red maggot is proving best on a small feeder. A long walk to the less weedy swims is required!

The Hundred Foot Drain

Low and clear - best give this a miss at the moment.

River Lark

Good size Rudd at the road bridge in double figure catches on the pole at 9m. Maggot proving the best bet with hemp fed little and often. The Bream are still hanging around the railway bridge but are proving hard to get to feed.

The Old West, Stretham

Big Perch in the deeper swims near the bridge on lobworm - Watch out for the Eels! Further up the venue Tench are showing in evening catches.

Come on lads, let’s have you catch reports good or bad. We need to keep members informed.

Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

19 July 2011; Still Waters

Milton Country Park

Fishing really well. Wayne Martin had a magnificent catch of Rudd to 2lbs totalling 36lbs and only put fish of 1/2lb and above in his net. Trevor Sturge witnessed the catch which included a tench of 6lb 7oz.

Best baits are sweet corn or worm and maggot. The method is what you fancy but a cage feeder sorts out the better fish. Will Temple had Tench to 4lbs and Rudd to 2lbs in a catch totalling 20lbs on the open day. Worm and three red maggots proved best. Photographs of the day to follow.

Reach Lake

Skimmers, Rudd and Tench showing in this little venue. Thanks to anglers for helping clear the litter, please help all you can to keep our venues tidy. Its your club!

19 July 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode, Upware

Pegs at Upware producing Skimmers and occasional Tench and proper Bream. Worm and castor best baits for the better fish fishing on the pole. Watch out for big Perch that love lobworm!

The River Cam, Baits Bite Lock

Bream now showing above the lock at Baits Bite - A14 pegs are best. Fish the cage feeder with worm and castor. Fish to 4lbs showing in catches of up to 30lbs. Access to the pegs is from the towpath. Park at the road on the verge at Fen Road from Milton.

The River Lark

Please help us here and keep swims clear near the bridge. Skimmers and Rudd are showing well although the Roach are not feeding to anglers baits at the moment. End of this month and I expect the Roach to dominate in catches to seed baits.

Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

The Old West, Stretham

Myself & my family fished The Old West at Stretham Sunday 10th July during the afternoon and evening. We caught an assortment of silver fish using maggots in the margins and mid river, species included Perch, Rudd, Roach, Bleak and Skimmer Bream. There was evidence of some groundbait remaining from a previous angler.

Notable fish were a Perch of around 1lb, Rudd up to 1/2lb, an immaculate Common Carp in the region of 12-15lb, and an Eel of around 2-3lb. We also saw a couple of other large Carp cruising the margins during the afternoon. Regards, Russ Milton

12 July 2011; Access to Cleared Swims

It should be noted that at this time of year access to cleared swims on the Lode, Lark, Upper Cam and the Great Ouse at Swavesey is going to be limited. The Environment Agency start clearing banks from mid July after nesting birds have fledged. Please be patient or help us and spend a few minutes clearing a swim. Around 15 swims are available at Upware on the Lode but the venue is weedy so take a rake.

Graham Tweed - President CFPAS Ltd.

12 July 2011; Still Waters

Milton Country Park

I fished the deep pool in peg 36 on the 7th July . The weather was cool and blustery with some rain which then cleared. I caught 15lbs of quality Roach on sweetcorn fished over hemp in 8ft of water. My biggest Roach was 1lb-4oz, but I lost a big Tench at the net of around 6lbs - so I am going to go back after prebaiting for the Tench. I fished a small cage feeder with crumb and sweet corn packed in. I had problems with Pike which resulted in two lost fish to the predator's. Tried worm and corn but no success; they just love corn. Graham Tweed.

Reach Lake

That is what it is called, but it is a small clay pit. Only three pegs available as swims have yet to be cleared. A rubbish picking party is necessary - any volunteers? We need you help so please come forward. Also if you are interested in looking after it for us. Catches have been quite good with Skimmers and Rudd to sweetcorn. No reports of Carp.

The adjacent lode is weedy but go fish spotting to find feeding fish. Graham Tweed.

Sportsmen Pit

Only three pegs available as others have closed in. Fishing very poor at the moment so best avoided. Graham Tweed.

12 July 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode

Sport picking up with Skimmers showing at Upware. Rake a swim and fish into the evening and you will be rewarded with Tench to 4lbs and Bream to 3lbs. Corn is best. Big Rudd have been spotted further up from the boats towards the Wicken Lode. Travel light and spot your fish for best results. Graham Tweed.

The River Cam

The weed has grown back above the lock. It's best to fish in the gaps dropping into with heavy pole rigs. The Bream are starting to show in greater numbers but Roach sport remains slow. Fish a feeder into the weed, this sometimes produces better catches, but lost fish can make life frustrating. Graham Tweed

The River Lark

The weather was bad today 7th July, heavy rain. So we decided to fish the afternoon to evening in two swims cut out on Tuesday evening and pre-baited. But with the afternoon sun shinning we first stopped and had a look at two likely swims just up stream of the railway bridge, and what a sight ,a shoal of Bream like we had not seen in the river for many a year, just lying there sunning their selves. The shoal was about twenty yards long and right across the river and they were big fish as well some looked to be 6lbs +. Lets hope they get there heads down and stay near by for next time we come, Because you will not catch them when they are like that. So of we went an fished the two swim down stream , a good session but only a few Skimmers ,but we did have some cracking rudd this time round all caught on worm again. Ian (Choppie) Asplen.

The Great Ouse, Swavesey

The venue is very weedy but you can find channels sometimes close in. Bit of a walk is required or fish from one of the platforms. Perch and Rudd have made up catches on pole rigs with red maggot on the hook. Graham Tweed.

Heritage Lake

tony-duffin tony-duffin tony-duffin

Double figure Carp taken by Tony Duffin on a variety of boilie baites in a night session at Heritage Lake.

Milton Country Park

No reports this week from the Carp lads. Come on give us some info!

As you know this venue is my favourite for big Rudd. This type of fishing is neglected on this venue, but most clear swims will produce fish. Put on a maggot and you will catch all day long. The better fish come to sweetcorn or red worm either on a little feeder or to float tactics. Keep the bait going in and work up the swim. Often the Tench will move onto the feed so you end up with a mixed bag. I fished peg 37 today with a little ground bait feeder fished close to the bush in 8ft of water and had roach to 1lb 8oz on sweetcorn. I kept it simple and the bait going in and ended up with 20lbs. Graham Tweed, President CFPAS Ltd.

Nethergorve Lake

The lake is fishing well with Carp to 4lbs in catches of five or six per session. Worm and maggot on the float is proving popular with this combination also producing quality Rudd and Perch.

5 July 2011; River Report

The River Cam, Overview

The river is clear so fishing is tricky mainly Bream and Eels. The Roach are not showing, but I expect sport to pick up this month with hemp and tares scoring.

The River Cam, Byron's Pool

Very weedy but reports of Chub to 4lbs on sweetcorn and cheese paste.

The River Great Ouse, Eaton Socon

I fished at the weir in Eaton Socon last Saturday afternoon until dark. Took my 13 yr old grandson with me. We soon caught some quality Dace on maggot and good Perch up to 1lb. As the light level fell we fished into the white water of the weir using feeders and meat for bait. The bites were quick to follow and in the last hour we picked up two small barble 1-2lb range and I finished off with a good size eel over 2lb.

?? ALARM ?? Above the weir in the slower water I spotted a Red Neck Terrapin swimming around another non native species in the river. Ian Gypps

The River Lark

George Ivetts and I fished the river on the 23rd and 30th June downstream between the railway bridge and Folly Drove - the exact place only we know. After two or three heavy weed clearing sessions and pre baits before every visit we had some cracking sport with Bream and Tench. Not big Bream this year, but plenty of them between 2-3lb, catching on average 25 per session each with some nice Tench thrown in for good measure - the best so far caught by George weighing 6lb 9oz, but had several in the 4lb bracket. All taken on our favourite bait of home grown red worms tipped with red corn. Ian Asplen (now known as Choppie).

The Old West

liam-darler

Liam's winning catch

The second round of Cambridge charity fund raisers series in aid of Magpas was fished on the old west at Stretham Old Engine and despite the conditions (violent thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong wind) and the river being thick with weed the river fished well.

The winner was Laim Darler with a fine catch of 15lb 11oz comprising Silver Fish taken on pinkie backed up with three Tench. Second was Liam's father Ian Darler with 7lb 11oz of Skimmers, Roach and a Tench, and third was Mick Curtis with 6lb 1oz of Silver Fish.

The river looks in great form for the club match, the only down side was the stile at the car park - with all the heavy rain it was very slippery.

28 June 2011; Still Waters

Barnwell Lake

Sport still slow, but with more settled weather expect evenings to be best for Tench and Bream. Worm or castor best fished against a feature.

Milton Country Park

Fishing well for Rudd with fish to 2lbs in catches of 20lbs. Our coaching day is coming up soon. All welcome book, for a coaching session.

Nethergrove Lake

The carp are in spawning mood so sport is slow. Roach catches are improving to sweet corn fished over loose feed.

28 June 2011; River Report

The River Cam, Whittlesford

This is extreme fishing - if you can get to the water and find a hole in the weed then you have done well. Reports of large roach to 1 14 oz in catches of up to four fish on flake.

Fishery Officers

Borrow Pit, Fenced Acre Pond and the Hundred Foot Drain

Tony Corlito has taken on the role of Fishery Officer for these waters, a role he had a few years back. Welcome back Tony. We hope to have some reports from him shortly.

The Great Ouse, Over

We need a Fishery Officer for this water, is anyone interested?

21 June 2011; Still Waters

Barnwell Lake

Sport slow at the moment. Tench only feeding early morning and evening.

Mepal, Block Fen A

Paul Sutton bagged a 15lb Carp and a 5-5-0 Bream from the Pump Pond pegs. Good sport for Roach and Rudd to caster and worm.

Heritage Lake

Double figure carp in night sessions to a variety of boilie baites. Tench to 3lbs in catches of five or six to sweet corn on light float rigs. Please note Tony Duffin has been appointed fishery officer for the lake. Anglers must not alter or create swims without approval from Tony. Help in litter clearing is required and is to be directed by Tony.

Nethergrove Lake

Sport with Carp to 4lbs. Catches of five or so per session are common. Surface baits are best.

Milton Country Park

Reports of double figure Rudd and Roach catches along the early pegs (1 to 7) in the deeper water. Loose feed at regular intervals with sweet corn is producing. Fish up to 2lbs.

21 June 2011; River Report

Burwell Lode

Mainly Eels to lobworm. The weather has had an impact on this fishery but expect things to improve over the next couple of weeks.

The River Cam

Fishing conditions have been difficult. The river is clear making the fish wary. Roach sport is poor. Skimmers up to 2lbs above the lock in catches of around 10lbs. A double figure carp was landed at the A14 road bridge. There are quite a few carp in this stretch of the river but they are not targeted.

The River Lark

Night fishing has produced catches of Eels, so again a poor start.

14 June 2011; Still Waters

Borrow Pit

Good sport with Tench up to 4lbs and Perch to 1lb. Paul Sutton had a fine catch of 26 Tench to worm fished over chopped worm and sweetcorn. The tench are moving into their spawning grounds in this unusual venue.

Mepal, Fenced Acre Pond

This little pond is producing mixed bags of Roach and Bream with the occasional small Tench. Maggot over loose feed is best.

Pump Pond, Block Fen

Producing Carp to 15lbs on surface baites, and Roach and Rudd to maggot over a little loose feed.

Nethergrove Lake

Perch to 3lbs caught on worm. The Carp are spawning at the moment so are preoccupied.

2 June 2011; Still Waters

Nethergrove Lake, Longstanton

Nethergrove is fishing well with Carp to 4lbs being taken - surface baits work well - and Silverfish to sweet corn or caster over a little loose feed.

Barnwell Lake

Tench to 3lbs are being caught in early morning and evening sessions - pellet is best fishing against a feature. Bream to 3lbs are falling to worm and castor fished in the deeper water.

Milton Country Park

Double figure catches of Rudd to 2lbs and Roach to 1lb have been reported. Feed heavy with ground bait mixed with chopped worm and castors. The tench will also come onto this feed. Carp to 14lbs showing to pop up baits. Perch to 3lbs on lobworm in the early numbered pegs.

Block Fen, Mepal

Meal is fishing really well with double figure catches of Roach and Rudd including fish to 2lbs. Sweet corn or pellet best. Carp to 25lbs in catches of up to 6 fish per session. Fishmeal boilers are best at present.

Heritage Lake

Carp to 15lbs now showing to pop up bates. Plenty of small Tench and Rudd to sweet corn fished on the waggler.

Reach Lake

Good sport consisting of mixed bags of Tench and Skimmers to red maggot over a little ground bait with worm and castor mixed.

2 June 2011; River Reports

As the new season looms ever nearer I have had reports of a large shoal of bream on the cam over at the A14 road bridge. We have a club match on the river on the 19th of June which should give us some pointers.

Burwell Lode

Double figure carp have been seen at Upware and where the Reach and Burwell Lode come together. Some very large Rudd have also been seen along the rushes at Upware with fish to 3lbs.
