Our match was
held above baits bite lock for the first time for many years. It brought
back some memories!40 years ago I was a young lad who having caught a
few roach and dace listened intently to Jack Baker the then President of
CFPAS. He talked about angling and then went on to present the
prizes to us lads. Standing on the steps of the lock house his booming
voice over the chatter of us kids. I have still got the little
real I won that day. In Later years Greg and Cliff took up the
mantle and run the match in their enthusiastic and sometimes eccentric
way. Then we let Percy loose! This was the era of well, lets say, huge
success but quite stressful for us pen pushers or those that worry. It
was hard work for Will, George and Morris, I just got greyer. It would
though lead to Percy's finest hour. You see one year he had this
obsession to have 200 kids lined up from bites bite lock to the pike and
eel! He had an army of helpers, as to not help would mean you would be
shine dined which was Percy's way to make you suffer so holidays were
cancelled, stag dos missed and along with other major events.130 kids
lined the bank that day. Percy stood gazing along the river drew a puff
on his rollup and said ....see son I told you I would do it... 200!
Yes Percy fantastic but aren't you a bit worried about accidents?
He replied in his scolding way. Listen son in over 40 years I have never
once had a thing go wrong let alone an accident! hats truly remarkable I
replied.
Jimmy, Percy's
Dog looked up at me as if to say... You are pushing your luck! Not
deterred I said...But what about the time when you pegged Anneka under
the low electricity cables , the time the lad got stung by a bee and had
to go to hospital and what about the lad that fell in and his mum went
in also? Percy drew another puff....never had an accident in over 40
years... son!
So to our event
in 2009! 24 fished which is by far more manageable and very good for
these times. Everything in order, risk assessments in place and coaches
to hand and a lovely warm day. It was good to see three generations of
the Legge family on the bank, Along with Tim Drake his daughter.
Young Liam was along fresh from his holiday and a winners medal for the
div 2 national. I'm certain we will see competition between Ruby
Darler And Wills son Alfie in the not to distant future. much like the
rivalry between Liam and Anneka a few years back.
Congratulations
John and a big thank you to the team of helpers.
