ANNUAL ANGLING TOURNAMENT

SATURDAY  13th SEPTEMBER 2008

RIVER CAM (PENNY FERRY PUBLIC HOUSE)

Prizes galore for young talent and golden oldies

Floating and sub-surface weed, clear water and bright sunshine combined to make the Cam at Chesterton hard going for Saturday’s annual Cambridge Fish Preservation AS juniors, ladies and OAPs contest.

Generous sponsorship from Renault dealership West’s of Cambridge plus Mick Dant of Waterside Angling Supplies ensured nobody left empty-handed from a heavily laden prize table - even those who failed to trouble the scalesmen.

Daniel Lindsay, 15, made the most of downstream end peg towards the railway bridge to amass 2-13 of roach, bleak and blade skimmers backed by a couple of handy 4oz perch.

His commendable effort earned him a carp rod and reel, an umbrella plus trophies and replicas as overall champion and 14-16s age group winner ahead of Becky Pope 0-5 and Harry Weedon 0-2-8.

With nobody weighing in from the intermediate 12-13s age group, the closest battle was fought in the 8-11s category where nine-year-old Holly Legge edged home with 1-13 from Chantel Williams on 1-7 and Ben Mansfield 1-1.

Pete Proctor claimed the senior citizens top prize with two perch for 0-10, pipping his regular fishing pal Dave Reid by half an ounce with Kevin Standring third on 0-9.

Teresa Northfield beat Sandra Weedon to the Ladies title by 0-5-8 to 0-4-8, while a 5oz perch earned Jordan Lewis the specimen award. The John West special achievement award went to Jack Butcher.

“This match has a special place in Cambridge angling and much of that is due to the efforts of Percy Anderson, who ran it for so many years. I’m pleased we have managed to keep it going in the years since Percy passed away. My thanks go to all the sponsors, stewards, helpers and competitors,” said organiser John Pope.
